The Reality of Budgetary Reform in OECD Nations: Trajectories and ConsequencesBudgetary

John Wanna, Lotte Jensen, Jouke De Vries, "The Reality of Budgetary Reform in OECD Nations: Trajectories and ConsequencesBudgetary "
Publisher: Pub | 2010 | ISBN 1840646896 | PDF | 313 pages | 1.3 MB

The Reality of Budgetary Reform in OECD Nations investigates the impacts and consequences of budgetary reform through a comparative assessment of advanced Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) democracies that have undertaken budget reforms over the past two to three decades.
This unique book traces the `story of reform' in the respective countries. The expert authors explore the journey each country took, what the objectives were, the approach taken, the main events and key dates, what was implemented and what was discarded or replaced. They capture both the essence of each nation's approach, as well as discuss the similarities and trends. The study investigates how the various roles of the central budget agencies have changed with respect to public expenditure, how budget processes have developed and the impact on the relations between key actors. It also analyses the internal cultures of central budget agencies and how they evaluate events, problems and their roles in controlling the fiscal policy of government.
With its comparative focus, this timely book is essential reading for the OECD and World Bank affiliates. Likewise, scholars and researchers of public finance, international and comparative government, and development and public sector management should not be without this important resource.

Patents and Industry Standards

Jae Hun Park, "Patents and Industry Standards"
Publisher: Pub | 2010 | ISBN 1849800111 | PDF | 238 pages | 1.2 MB

This insightful book reviews the inherent conflict between patent rights and industry standards and through analysis of both US and European case law proposes measures to improve current systems and foster greater innovation.
Jae Hun Park searches for the appropriate balance between the rights of patent owners and the need for industry standards within the scope of patent law. He considers the current solutions pred by legal systems and using cost-benefit analysis evaluates, from a legal and economic perspective, whether patent systems can be improved. Jae Hun Park proposes reform to the patent system that would introduce a `dynamic liability rule regime', rather than `property rules'. The `dynamic liability rule regime' adopts property rules at the stage when there are still competing standards, and liability rules at the stage when there are no competing standards. This would, he argues, resolve the conflict between patents and standards and mitigate the patent hold-up problem.
This is a must-read book for scholars interested in technology patents, innovation and competition law and policy, as well as those individuals working in standard setting organisations. It will also be of great interest to patent offices, patent attorneys and competition lawyers.

Ethics and Organizational Practice: Questioning the Moral Foundations of Management

Sara Louise Muhr, Bent M. Sorensen, Steen Vallentin, "Ethics and Organizational Practice: Questioning the Moral Foundations of Management"
Edward Elgar Pub | 2010 | ISBN: 1848441681 | 222 pages | PDF | 1,2 MB

`Morality and ethics are at the heart of business practice, but the concepts themselves are usually assumed, rather than investigated. The chapters in this book refuse such easy answers, and force the reader to confront their own assumptions about ethics, provoking conclusions that are both disturbing and exciting.'
- Martin Parker, University of Leicester, UK

This timely book provides a collection of critical explorations and discussions of managerial ethics and their moral foundations. It is concerned with theoretical, conceptual and practical matters, and thus provides an open and broad approach to a very dense field of enquiry.

Ethics and Organizational Practice challenges established theory in management studies and, in particular, provides a post-foundational argument to conventional business ethics. The contributors cover topics from corporate social responsibility and individual morality to primatology, psychopathology and corruption. They provide a multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional exploration of managerial ethics and its moral foundation, presenting a critical understanding of the conditions of ethics in modern organizations.

The book presents a philosophically informed critique of simplified notions of managerial and organizational ethics, making it an excellent resource for postgraduate students and scholars of business ethics, critical management, corporate social responsibility, international business and organizational psychology.

Debt Management for Development: Protection of the Poor and the Millenium Development Goals

Kunibert Raffer, "Debt Management for Development: Protection of the Poor and the Millenium Development Goals"
Edward Elgar Pub | 2010 | ISBN: 1849801088 | 309 pages | PDF | 1,2 MB

`The problem of the debt burden and pleas for debt relief have been compared to the girl who killed both her parents and then pleaded for mercy on the ground that she was an orphan. (It has been called the classic definition of chutzpah.) Kunibert Raffer has more sympathy for the debtors. He discusses the international debt problem in a profound way and his proposal, the Raffer proposal, is ingenious, practical and wise.'
- Paul Streeten, Boston University, US

`Kunibert Raffer, a distinguished academic, has never confined himself to an ivory tower. Instead he has consistently used his extensive knowledge of law, history, economics and politics to argue for an end to the structural injustice of relationships between rich creditor countries and poor debtor nations. I have always admired the man and his work, and believe the ideas outlined in this book are vital if justice is to be the basis of international financial relations.'
- Ann Pettifor, New Economics Foundation and Advocacy International

This book exposes intolerable global double standards in the treatment of debtors and argues that fairness, economic efficiency and principles common to all civilized legal systems, must and can be applied to so-called `developing countries', or Southern sovereign debtors.

Tracing the history of Southern sovereign debts, describing the critical role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in enforcing improvements, and discussing technical debt issues, this book presents a solution incorporating the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as an appropriate form of debtor protection. Although most multilateral claims are statutorily subordinated to development needs, multilateral institutions wrongly claim preferred creditor status. They routinely violate their own statutes. Kunibert Raffer discusses grants and loans as alternative ways to finance the MDGs and development and necessary caveats on widely used debt statistics and indicators are made. The effects of the present US crisis are also discussed, making solving the never-ending debt problem particularly urgent.

With innovative and never-before discussed topics, this book will appeal to NGO employees, academics and students in development or international relations and political studies. Overseas development institutions, development co-operation ministries and departments will also find this a very useful reference tool.

Employment Protection Legislation: Evolution, Effects, Winners and Losers

Per Skedinger, "Employment Protection Legislation: Evolution, Effects, Winners and Losers"
Publisher: Edward Elgar Pub | 2010 | ISBN 1848447566 | PDF | 183 pages | 1.2 MB

`In this book, Per Skedinger gives an excellent and balanced survey and evaluation of both the theoretical prediction and the empirical research about the consequences of legislated employment protection.'
- From the foreword by Assar Lindbeck
Employment protection legislation is one of the most controversial issues in the labour market. In this insightful book, Per Skedinger provides an overview of the design, evolution and research on the effects of employment protection legislation around the world.
Most countries have some form of employment protection legislation. Against a background of high and rising unemployment in many countries, politicians and representatives of unions and businesses often have differing views as to the desirability, effects and distributional consequences of the legislation. The book covers more than one hundred international studies, dealing with the impact of legislation on productivity, personnel turnover, structural change, perceived job security, and the aggregate level and distribution of employment and unemployment.
Being the first comprehensive and up-to-date survey available of economic research on the effects of employment protection, this book will appeal to researchers in economics, industrial relations and law, as well as to policymakers and practitioners dealing with employment protection issues in government, business and trade unions.

Paul Tennant, John Willis - All You Need Is Luck--: How I Got a Record Deal by Meeting Paul McCartney

Paul Tennant, John Willis - All You Need Is Luck--: How I Got a Record Deal by Meeting Paul McCartney
Publisher: Happy About | 2008-01 | ISBN: 1600050557 | PDF | 241 pages | 5.07 MB

This is not just another story about the Beatles and the magical l960s, although they do feature heavily in it. It’s also the tale of reaching for the stars and achieving every teenage boy’s ambition. It’s an adventure that took me on an exciting journey from the back streets of Liverpool in l959 to the heart of the Beatles empire in London in l967.
All You Need is Luck tells of my teenage hopes and dreams and how I finally achieved them - through luck, talent and perseverance. The story talks of my struggle in a working-class family, with my mother suffering from Multiple Sclerosis and how I overcame some pretty hard times to eventually make a record and hit the big time in London. It’s an inspiration to other young musicians to show that you can get anything, if you really want it badly enough.
Liverpool at the height of the Mersey-beat Boom of the early l960s was a fascinating place to be – Imagine the setting – a city decimated by German bombers, just emerging from the austerity and poverty of the l950s with loads of kids who just wanted to make music. Anything was possible in those early, heady days of pop music: everyone was being signed to record labels after the Beatles broke onto the charts.
In l967 the Fab Four could do no wrong and were at the top of their profession. It was The Summer of Love and in my book I describe how I met Paul McCartney in Hyde Park, after a car chase through the streets of London, and with the naïve courage of the young I approached him and persuaded him to help me get me a record deal through the Beatles’ brand new company, Apple. And so then, there I was, right at the heart of it, making music for Apple and being paid for it, staying at John Lennon’s house, borrowing his and George Harrison’s guitars, hanging out with huge stars of the era, meeting tons of girls-- and loving every minute of it!
But just when I had it in the palm of my hand…I stupidly let it all slip away.

Self-Management and Leadership Development

Mitchell G. Rothstein, Ronald J. Burke, "Self-Management and Leadership Development"
Edward Elgar Pub | 2010 | ISBN: 1848443234 | 518 pages | PDF | 1,8 MB

`This book is based on a really important, timely and relevant idea - to bring together sources on the self-management of leadership development. The book is important because almost all leadership development relies to a great degree on the leader's capability to manage his or her personal development. It is timely because there is currently no single volume that covers the topic; and it is relevant because leadership is such an extremely important issue for the success of our organizations, countries and society in general. The editors have done a thoroughly professional job in identifying top quality authors and combining their contributions into a very worthwhile volume.'
- Ivan Robertson, University of Leeds, UK

Self-Management and Leadership Development offers a unique perspective on how leaders and aspiring leaders can and should take personal responsibility for their own development.

This distinguished book is differentiated from other books on this topic with its view on the instrumental role played by individuals in managing their own development, rather than depending on others, such as their organization, to guide them. Expert scholars in the area of leadership emphasize the importance of self-awareness as the critical starting point in the process. Explicit recommendations are provided on how individuals can manage their own self-assessment as a starting point to their development. The contributors present insights and practical recommendations on how individuals can actively self-manage through a number of typical leadership challenges.

Business school faculty teaching electives in leadership, and managers who engage in leadership development for themselves or others, should not be without this important resource. Consulting firms and training institutions offering leadership development programs and participants in MBA and executive development programs will also find it invaluable.

The Entrepreneurial Society: How to Fill the Gap Between Knowledge and Innovation

Jean Bonnet, "The Entrepreneurial Society: How to Fill the Gap Between Knowledge and Innovation"
Edward Elgar Pub | 2010 | ISBN: 1848448910 | 272 pages | PDF | 4,1 MB

This timely book analyses the emergence of new firms in a broad context where economics, management and sociological approaches may be joined for a new perspective.

The Entrepreneurial Society reveals that the market benefits of an entrepreneurial economy are evident in the new technology that has been made available to consumers over the past ten to 20 years. It illustrates that entrepreneurial firms provide the market with innovations that create new products and, in turn, generate new employment and tax revenue, thus playing a critical role in surviving the economic crisis. The expert contributors explore the diverse conditions that explain, permit and support entrepreneurship, allowing thinking `outside the box' and enhancing breakthrough innovations. At a time when new challenges relating to the ecological footprint are appearing, this work will prove crucial.

The eclectic approaches to entrepreneurship within this book, gathered from different countries and fields of research, will prove to be hotly sought after by researchers and postgraduate students of entrepreneurship and social policy.

Leadership from the Inside Out: Becoming a Leader for Life

Leadership from the Inside Out: Becoming a Leader for Life By Kevin Cashman
Publisher: Berrett-Koehler 2008 | 215 Pages | ISBN: 1576755991 | PDF | 1 MB

When Kevin Cashman first published Leadership from the Inside Out a decade ago, it turned leadership development on its head. Cashman’s groundbreaking core argument—that developing the leader requires developing the whole person—represented a radical departure from traditional models, which were transactional management training rather than authentic leadership development. In his book, CEO’s and trainers everywhere found the affirmative model they knew they needed, and they signed on by the thousands.
Cashman’s book has only grown more relevant with time. Since the original volume was published almost a decade ago, mounting research finally has caught up with and validated many of the principles that were practically unthinkable just a decade ago. Research by Goleman, Collins, Zenger and Folkman, Lominger, Korn/Ferry and others now quantifies how deepening personal awareness and interpersonal effectiveness produces more sustainable leadership results; how better behavioral change occurs when coaching follows training; and how all effective leaders must move from content to context to get to the top. It is no longer possible to discount these principles as soft; they produce measurable returns on investment, and they are essential to substantial leadership, team, and organizational success.
In this 10th Anniversary Edition of Leadership from the Inside Out, Cashman brings readers up to date and beyond. He incorporates much of this important research as part of his continuing quest to “make the hard case for soft skills.”

Rethinking Leadership: A New Look at Old Leadership Questions (New Horizons in Leadership Studies)

Donna Ladkin, "Rethinking Leadership: A New Look at Old Leadership Questions (New Horizons in Leadership Studies)"
Publisher: Pub | 2010 | ISBN 1847209351 | PDF | 202 pages | 1 MB

`Books about leadership abound, often generalizing from a heroic leader's own experiences or reflecting the latest incremental advances in scholarly theorizing. Rethinking Leadership is different in that Ladkin questions the key questions of leadership thinking and thus arrives at a radically different conception of leadership. It is a welcome conception that recognizes the embodied, sensual, felt nature of leadership as an ongoing process involving leaders and followers within a particular context. For the complex and challenging times we live in, we need complex and challenging conceptions of leadership and Donna Ladkin has given us an excellent starting place.'
- Steve Taylor, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, US`
`Beautifully written, insightful and novel, this book departs nicely from mainstream views on leadership and can be strongly recommended to anyone wanting a new look on the complexities, meanings and dynamics of leadership and workplace relations.'
- Mats Alvesson, Lund University, Sweden
`Donna Ladkin's inspiring and informed book breaks new ground in leadership studies. Writing lucidly, warmly and accessibly, Ladkin makes philosophy to bear on some key themes of leadership. Picking up concepts from philosophy's all time greats, she enriches the existing leadership discourse powerfully. Questions of "charisma", "vision", indeed the nature of leadership itself, are cast in fresh settings, and they become alive. Skilfully avoiding becoming overtly abstract, with a keen eye to examples, Donna Ladkin delivers a delightful, elevating and original contribution to the rethinking of leadership.'
- Esa Saarinen, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland
`Adopting a post-positivist phenomenological perspective inspired by the writings of Husserl and Heidegger among others, Donna Ladkin crafts a series of philosophical questions that prompt the reader to deconstruct and reposition many habitually held views of leaders and leadership. Through her deep questioning, Ladkin reminds us that wisdom - the virtue of practical circumspection - is central to the ethical and aesthetic moment of leading. Rethinking Leadership is a refreshing and much-needed re-evaluation of the field, which should be read by anyone with a serious interest in the subject.'
- Peter Case, University of the West of England, UK
`Writing anything new about leadership might seem like a difficult task these days. Writing anything new and interesting about leadership might seem beyond most of us. Writing anything new, interesting and provocative about leadership is restricted to only a few very talented scholars. Ladkin is one of these very talented scholars - she has done all three in a groundbreaking review of the nature of leadership and the questions we should be asking about this phenomenon.'
- Keith Grint, University of Warwick, UK
A must-read for serious leadership studies scholars, Rethinking Leadership offers a radical reconceptualisation of leadership as a contextually embedded, physically embodied phenomenon. The book arrives at original and surprising answers to perennial questions such as `What is leadership?' and `How do leaders lead change?', by addressing them from a philosophical, rather than psychological or sociological standpoint.
Beautifully written, Ladkin makes complex ideas accessible by illustrating them with practical examples drawn from her wide experience as a leadership academic and management consultant across a range of commercial, political and not-for-profit organisations. A fresh voice amongst the crowded field of leadership studies, Rethinking Leadership delivers not just new answers, but an entirely new way of thinking about leadership and its role in contemporary society.

Strategy Making in a Crisis: From Analysis to Imagination

Michael Gibbert, "Strategy Making in a Crisis: From Analysis to Imagination"
Publisher: Pub | 2010 | ISBN 1848442408 | PDF | 232 pages | 1.1 MB

`Michael Gibbert presents a thoughtful theoretical framework allowing readers to critically think about imaginations related to strategy making. His research is based on a highly complex case and diversified context allowing us to understand the use of different theories in an integrated way.'
- Gilbert Probst, World Economic Forum, Geneva, Switzerland
`Putting imagination center stage in strategy making is a long overdue perspective, one that can renew the field. Michael Gibbert makes an important contribution through this integrative framing.'
- Yves Doz, INSEAD, France
If you can't imagine the future of your company, how are you supposed to shape it? This book helps appreciate and execute imaginative strategy making.'
- Martin Hoegl, WHU Otto Beisheim Graduate School of Management, Germany
Which strategy making approach works best in a crisis? In current literature, the recommendations oscillate between prediction, control, and practice, but this unique book focuses specifically on strategy making in a crisis.
In a crisis, the business landscape is neither stable nor predictable, resources are scarce rather than abundant, customers disappear and shareholders revolt, all of which can make prediction and control very difficult. Drawing on evidence from philosophy, and on a multi-year case study of a major multinational, Michael Gibbert points to three different kinds of imaginations and proposes a three-step model for imaginative strategy making.
Introducing new topics on this subject, Strategy Making in a Crisis will strongly appeal to top-level managers, including corporate development departments, and business-unit level strategy. Postgraduate students will also receive ideas for their own theses, not only from the content, but also from the approach - which is deductive and integrates management theories using social science literature - and methodology.
